Overview

What is Overwhelm and what causes it?

Being overwhelmed occurs when there is too much of something going on – we feel like we are drowning or being buried.

This can happen for a number of reasons, but a feeling of too many things to do, too much work, too much work pressure, and too many deadlines can be a major contributor.

Feeling overwhelmed has repercussions on the whole of our life.  It can make us feel tired, interfere with our sleep, and make it difficult for us to think rationally.  These negative emotions can make it more difficult for your body to fight off infections and can have a physical effect with fatigue, neck and upper back pain, for example.

Add all this together and it can affect every area of our life, impacting our social lives and relationships on top of work challenges.

All these feelings distract us from being effective and efficient and that, in turn, leads to “lowered” performance and sets up a vicious cycle dragging us further down.

This can lead to procrastination (making things worse!) and creative avoidance – doing things that don’t really matter to distract ourselves, or things that give us pleasure, putting off the real work further.

This remote course delivered via MS Teams will be delivered in 2 x 2 hour sessions.  These sessions offer a practical and experiential opportunity to understand, appreciate and acknowledge that different situations trigger people in different ways.  What one person will find “easy”, another will find “challenging” and adding to levels of stress.

Once we have an understanding of our personal “triggers” we are then in a better position to find the solutions to manage our stress, our workloads, and find effective ways that enable us to feel more “in control”.

Session One – 2 hours

What can we do about it?

The first thing to do is understand what’s going on and acknowledge the problem – learn about overwhelm, what it is and its effects.

Understand how our minds work – in simple, but extremely effective, ways:-

  • What holds us back – particularly limiting and negative beliefs.
  • Taking control of our self talk – “spring cleaning” things that no longer serve us well and embedding new, positive beliefs that will take us forward and help us achieve our goals more easily.
  • How to turn the vicious cycle of overwhelm into a positive cycle of achievement.

Understand that nobody can multi-task effectively.

Understand stress, and learn strategies to avoid, mitigate or cope with it.

Procrastination – what is it and what happens when we do it?

Strategies

Health and wellbeing:-

  • Exploring physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • The importance of nutrition and how diet impacts our minds.
  • Valuing our support networks.
  • Introducing the power of default thinking and behaviours and how we can use this information to support ourselves and build resilience.

A simple yet effective model to address that feeling of being overwhelmed and bring yourself into the present – as well as breaking the feeling of overwhelm.

Organising work and managing priorities effectively:-

  • Why “To Do” lists can add to the challenge.
  • An adaptation of the Japanese kanban system as a simple strategy.
  • Set realistic SMART goals and keep an eye on them to make sure you’re on track – stretch, don’t break!
  • What to do if you feel distracted by “something more attractive”.

Delegation and saying “no”:-

  • What is delegation and what are the benefits.
  • It’s OK to ask for help.

Outcomes:

  • Delegates can find the best solution for them individually with the information and understanding of the mind, feelings and personality.
  • Having practical tips, tools and strategies at their disposal, delegates will feel better empowered and confident to make the changes and adjustments that are right for them.
  • Delegates will have a deeper understanding of their personality and personal triggers.
  • They will have an appreciation that not everyone reacts in the same way as they do. As a result, communication with others could be enhanced.

Format of sessions: A mixture of whole group discussion; information from facilitators; personal exercises and small break out rooms with whole group debriefs.

All delegates will be asked to complete a pre-course CORE Matrix personality profile.

Post course support

A one hour “open” session via MS Teams will be offered to delegates one month after course completion.  This is optional but offers delegates the opportunity to share any challenges they have experienced and celebrate any successes and wins.

Two facilitators will be on the session to continue to support the learning.
