Councillor & Officer Relationships: Working Effectively Together – Managing the Political Relationship

Overview

This workshop is designed to explore the political and working relationship and interface between councillors and officers; and provides officers with the opportunity to understand the importance and develop their understanding of how to make the most of this unique but naturally complex political relationship.

Content will include:

• Clarifying the role and responsibilities of councillors and officers.
• The political interface between councillors and officers – the challenges and opportunities.
• The importance of political astuteness and how to develop political astuteness
• Exploring perceptions, motivations and expectations of councillors and officers.
• The ideal working arrangement between councillors and officers
• Putting it into practice – strategies for effective working collaborative working between councillors and officers.

This course will enable you to

• Describe the key issues and potential areas of conflict surrounding the political relationship.
• Understand the roles and responsibilities of councillors and officers
• Understand the concept, importance and how to develop political astuteness
• Take forward constructive approaches to developing a positive and productive way of working in a political environment.
• Consider ways to improve and develop the councillor and officer relationship
