Overview

Many council officers may not be aware of their legal responsibilities and obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty. Diversity impacts upon them in many aspects of their political lives particularly with developments in social media and their interaction with members of the public and the media. This entertaining course using interactive drama will bring everyone up to speed on where we are with equality and diversity today.

This course will enable you to

  • Be aware of the 2010 Equality Act and how it impacts upon you
  • Explore why this Act came about
  • Be able to identify the nine protected characteristics embodied in the new act, the types of discrimination protected and how the Public Sector Equality Duty impacts on them and their responsibilities
  • Understand the importance of appropriate use of media and social networking as a council officer and how this can impact upon the legal framework
  • Be able to define bullying, harassment and hate crime especially with reference to the law and council policies towards its employees and electors
  • Explore some techniques to challenge inappropriate behaviours, attitudes and language when needed
