Overview

Suicide is a complex and emotional subject. It can be something many people find difficult or distressing to talk about. Yet the more we develop our understanding of why people die by suicide, the better we can provide emotional support to people at risk – as individuals, as organisations and as a society – and even save lives.

This Managing Suicidal Conversations course will equip delegates with the skills and confidence to manage a conversation with someone who is having thoughts of suicide or showing signs of suicidal behaviour.

The course is led by an expert Samaritans facilitator and uses a variety of tools to encourage interaction and group learning.

This course will enable you to

• Appreciate the profile of suicide in the UK and ROI.
• Understand the background factors and feelings that can lead to suicidal thoughts.
• Recognise direct and indirect signs of suicidal ideation.
• Develop skills to manage a suicidal conversation sensitively and effectively.
• Explore strategies to assess and respond to risk.
• Know how and where to signpost to sources of additional support

Who is the Course aimed at

Anyone whose role may bring them into direct contact (either face to face or on the phone) with people experiencing thoughts and feelings of suicide.
