Overview

This course will provide delegates with the knowledge to be able to recognise and comply with the requirements of the RIPA process.

This course will enable you to

  • Learn about the Codes of Practice contents & interpretation
  • Hear about RIPA update, recent case law and judgements
  • Understand the corporate responsibilities, what are they, inspection issues and how to comply
    • Know the 5 Tests for the Authorising Officer (AO)
    • Understand Proportionality, what is it? How to explain it on paper
    • Understand the impact of the Collateral Intrusion Assessment on the proportionality test
    • Know the surveillance objectives and their impact on the process
    • Examine the role of Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CHIS)
    • Learn about equipment used, and how it impacts on the process and the proportionality test
  • Know the role of the AO in line with the latest Inspectors guidance and procedures
    • Understand how to assess the application form and what is required if authorising the activity
    • Understand how to deal with the product of the surveillance, such as images and how this will impact on the role of the AO
    • Learn about the requirements with regard to reviews, renewals and cancellations
    • Know about surveillance outside of RIPA including Facebook and Social Networking enquiries, corporate approach and responsibilities
  • Understand about joint surveillance with other agencies
    • Hear about Corporate and SRO responsibilities re errors
